How did majoring in English prepare you for your career?

My English degree has proved invaluable to me in my career as an educator. As a classroom teacher, I drew on the content and skills I learned as an English major to teach literary and informational reading, writing, language, and speaking and listening skills. Five years ago, I moved out of the classroom into the role of instructional coach and teacher leader. My degree again proved useful as I went on to earn a master's degree, an education specialist degree, and multiple endorsements and certifications. I now use my English degree daily to give feedback to other teachers, prepare district and state reports, write grants, create social media campaigns, communicate with stakeholders, speak to large crowds and so much more. I get to observe and model lessons in classrooms, and I must confess that my favorite classes are AP literature and AP language because they make me feel like I’m in college all over again!

How has majoring in English enriched your life?

Majoring in English prepared me for a myriad career options. I worked in college admissions shortly after graduating, but soon realized I wanted to be a teacher. My English degree provided an easy transition into education, and, in the classroom, I found a way to translate my love of reading and writing into a purpose and passion for teaching and learning. Imagine the joy you get out of reading a book or short story, and then imagine that joy multiplied when 30 students enjoy it as much as you do. There is something magical, and, yes, enriching, about reading and writing with young people. My degree gave me more than knowledge; it gave me confidence in my own ideas, an ability to communicate, and an openness to other points of view. I love what I do every day, and I am so grateful for the education and support I received earning a degree through the Valdosta State English department.

What advice or insight do you have for VSU alumni and students interested in your career field?

Some of the best teachers I have worked with have started as English majors, so I encourage English majors to explore the idea of teaching. There are so many opportunities in education, including teaching overseas, online teaching or teaching in traditional K-12 classrooms. I was excited to hear that VSU is now offering the B.A. in English and B.S.Ed. in Secondary Education Combination Program, which allows students to earn 2 degrees in one program. What an awesome opportunity for students who think teaching may be a career to explore one day. Additionally, my advice to students would be to maintain solid relationships with your professors and mentors; you will want letters of recommendation, people to network with and references for future employers. Lastly, enjoy your time as an English major and realize that your English degree can truly take you anywhere.
